Applicants must be graduates of ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency programs or Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowships and be board-eligible or board-certified in Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or board-eligible or board-certified in Pediatric Emergency Medicine by the American Board of Emergency Medicine or the American Board of Pediatrics.
They will work clinically in the capacity of an attending physician in the Emergency Department while pursuing training. This is not a permanent faculty appointment. However, graduates are welcome to apply for a permanent faculty position.
Upon successful completion of this one or two-year appointment (appointment length based on specific program and candidate educational qualifications and experience), the incumbent will earn a certificate of training completion and will have had the opportunity to earn a Master's degree as a component of the training program.
Our program is either a one- or two-year position where fellows will serve as part time faculty members at the states only comprehensive medical center. Fellows will be eligible for a one-year track if they have already completed an advance degree like an MPH. In the two-year fellowship, the fellows will obtain an MPH from the University of Iowa College of Public Health.
Goals
- Learn practical skills to address public health concerns and social determinants of health affecting our communities.
- Gain experience working with community agencies addressing population-based health concerns.
- Develop strategies to address social determinates of health found within the Emergency Department through a public health approach that coordinates with community agencies.
- Develop skills necessary for career success.

Curriculum Outline
- Clinical service in the Emergency Department of the University of Iowa
- Complete MPH at University of Iowa for a two-year program
- Research project focused on a Social EM topic
- Development of an educational project related to Social EM
- Participation in monthly Social EM conference and All-Fellows conference.
- Practical experience with community organizations aligned to work with population-based health concerns: human trafficking, chronically homeless, substance abuse, seasonal workers, etc.
- Participation in resident and medical education
- Optional activities with various free medical clinics, engagement with the Iowa Public Policy Center, the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights, etc
